Around the world in a week

Up to 5,000 people are expected to visit this year's Newland Avenue Festival which will involve more than 70 different events

#

Newland Avenue Festival celebrates the area's rich cultural mix, and involves people from more than 40 different ethnic groups.
Now in its third year, the festival takes place between 6 and 12 July at venues on Newland Avenue, including cafes, bars, clubs, council offices and community buildings.
Night-time attractions include a Mexican party, live music from Congolese and Kurdish bands and salsa nights, while afternoon and early evening events include exhibitions, food tasting and music and dance from different countries including China, Russia and India.
Supported by Hull City Council's Wyke Area Team, the festival is being organised by a group called the International Heart of Hull, a partnership of 40 different black and minority ethnic groups.
"Newland Avenue is not just a place for shopping, it's a place for culture," says organiser Abel Riviera.
"And it's a good example of how different cultures can live together in harmony."
This year's festival will have a Russian and eastern European theme.
For the first time, it will feature a parade, which will take place from Queen's Road to Cottingham Road, on Sunday 12 July.
Cultural groups will also be conducting two-hour workshops at local schools in which children can learn about costumes, artefacts, music and dance from other countries, including China, Mexico, Turkey and Russia, as well as about school life in those countries.
