Boats will rock Hull
 |
The new-look Hull and Humber yacht, which came second in the 07/08 Clipper race, was launched in a ceremony on the Thames in April |
Hull will be at the centre of the world stage – twice – when the Clipper Round-the-World Yacht Race starts and finishes at Hull Marina.
The 68-foot Hull and Humber yacht will be one of 10 identical boats taking part in the 35,000-mile race, which covers five continents in 10 months.
Its crew, made up of amateurs from all walks of life, will act as ambassadors, generating publicity for the region in more than 20 ports.
Other entries in the 09/10 race include a yacht from California, endorsed by governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and entries from Ireland, Canada, China and Singapore.
Commenting on Hull's role in hosting the start for the first time, record-breaking circumnavigator Sir Robin Knox-Johnston said: "It promises to be a spectacular event watched by thousands of visitors and seen by millions more via the internet and international media coverage."
Hull welcomes the boats on 6 September on the second day of Hull's annual Maritime Weekend.
The race starts on 13 September and finishes the following July.
