Park and ride boost

Hull City Council and East Yorkshire Motor Services (EYMS) have agreed to continue operating the Walton Street park and ride service.
EYMS took the service over from Veolia Transport at the end of March and are initially trialling it on a commercial basis without any subsidy from the council.
The change has been seamless, with buses running to the same timetable to and from the city centre every ten minutes, between 7am and 6.10pm (Monday to Friday) and 5.40pm on Saturday.
"We will work hard with the council to develop the service on this trial basis, with the aim of making it a permanent feature of the city's transport network," said Peter Shipp, chairman and chief executive of EYMS.

Share your memories

Wilberforce House Museum wants to hear from older people who wish to share their memories of the past.
In partnership with Age Concern, the museum is holding reminiscence sessions at which people are being invited to share their knowledge with museum staff, while making new friends.
"Precious memories of Hull need to be kept and stored for future generations," said assistant curator Vanessa Salter.
"Life in Hull is constantly changing and capturing these experiences enhances the objects kept by Hull's museums."
Old photos and objects relating to Hull will help stimulate discussions at the monthly sessions, which will each have a different theme.
Themes will include love and marriage, toys and games, and famous people from the past.
The next meetings are at Wilberforce House Museum, High Street, on 18 June and 16 July.

Fighting back

Thirty events to inform and inspire business leaders from the Hull region will help the area fight back against the effects of the credit crunch.
It's all part of Business Week 2009 which includes motivational talks, advice about health and safety, attracting more tourists to Hull, information for exporters who trade overseas, a conference on fisheries, and other events to give business leaders a 'can do' attitude to ride out the recession.
As this issue of Hull in print went to press, events were set to take place at various locations from 1 June.
Those included Hull Truck Theatre, the KC Stadium, Hull University Business School and King George Dock, ending with the Yorkshire International Business Convention at Bridlington Spa on 5 June.

Lord Mayor of Hull

Last month's Hull in print included an article about the position of Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull which featured Cllr Karen Woods.
Unfortunately, the article did not make the process of election clear.
Hull in print would therefore like to clarify that the election of Cllr Woods to this position was by no means a foregone conclusion.
The holder of this office is determined annually through an election at the council's Annual General Meeting (AGM), this year held on 21 May 2009.
As this edition off Hull in print went to press, the 2009 AGM had not taken place.
We will confirm the name of the 97th Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull and Admiral of the Humber in the July edition.
Hull in print apologises for any lack of clarity in last month's article regarding the process of electing the Lord Mayor.

Tribute to councillor

Former Hull City councillor and Honorary Alderman John Atkinson died in April this year, aged 87.
He began his service as a councillor by winning the Stoneferry by-election in 1981, and went on to represent the Derringham, Boothferry and finally Pickering wards before his retirement in 2002.
He was made an Honorary Alderman of the city the same year.
He sat on many council committees and served for 17 years on the Housing Committee, 12 of which as deputy chair.
"He was a hard working, committed, and level-headed councillor to work with and he had a real understanding of housing issues affecting Hull," said Cllr John Black, who was chair of the Housing Committee from 1983 to 1995.

Fun in the city

Hull's three main shopping centres will host an action-packed day of health, beauty and fashion on 20 June.
The 'Fun in the City' day will include hair and beauty-related events at the Prospect Centre, while fashion shows and makeovers will take place at St Stephen's.
Princes Quay will be getting 'physical' with competitions and healthy living activities, while in Queen Victoria Square there will also be a wide range of health-related activities from 'street doctor' style check-ups to fitness fun.
Some of the city centre's shops will also be taking part in the day, co-ordinated by Hull's Business Improvement District (BID).
BID manager Ken Baldwin said: "It's a chance for people to indulge in a little pampering and check on their health and fitness while shopping."

Tell us your sporting hero

Do you know an amateur sporting hero worthy of recognition?
If so, why not nominate them for the first-ever Hull and East Yorkshire Sporting Heroes and Champions Awards?
The awards, set up by First Hull Trains and radio station KCFM 99.8, aim to recognise the commitment to and passion for any sport shown by local people, young or old.
That includes everyone from sports stars and coaches to those who work behind the scenes washing the kits and maintaining the pitches.
Meanwhile, to promote the event, Hull Trains and KCFM are giving away a signed Hull FC shirt (for details of how to win see page 36).
The awards will be presented at a glitzy ceremony at Hull City Hall at the end of the year.

Platform 2 Success

#

Award winner Terri Williamson is congratulated by Jon Plant, head of safeguarding and development

Children and young people from across the city are on the 'Platform 2 Success'.
They recently attended a celebration event at the Royal Hotel, in Hull city centre, after being nominated for their positive attitudes and behaviours by social workers and other Hull City Council staff.
Ninety children and young people, some of whom have faced difficult life experiences, attended and were awarded certificates recognising their achievements.
"It is hoped that the opportunities young people receive as a result of being nominated will increase their self confidence and promote positive well-being," said Naomi Robinson, a children's participation worker with Hull Children's Fund, who helped organise the event.
