On your bike

The news crew, who are from Marfleet Primary School, had cycling proficiency lessons to help them be safer when cycling on the road.
Here are some of the things they learned:

To help keep you safe when cycling:

  • wear a helmet
  • use lights when it is dark
  • wear reflective clothing
  • make sure your bike is working properly
  • use a good lock to leave your bike safe

Good things about cycling are that:

  • it keeps you fit and healthy
  • there are lots of cycle tracks in Hull
  • it's better for the environment
  • it's free to cycle
  • you can go anywhere

Bad things about cycling are that:

  • it can be very tiring
  • bikes are not cheap to buy
  • they can get stolen
  • it can be dangerous when on the road with cars

Wheelie great fun

Bikes come in all sizes and shapes. A bike made for two people is called a tandem. A bike with only one wheel is called a unicycle. The news crew found it very hard to ride a unicycle when they had a go at circus skills.
National Bike Week takes place between 13th and 21st of June. There will be lots of fun and different bikes to try out at National Play Day on 5th August between 11am – 3pm in Queen's Gardens.

Wildlife Week

Wildlife Week – well actually it's three weeks – takes place between 30th May and 20th June.
Everyone can get involved during Wildlife Week. It's about looking around where you live to see lots of animals, birds, insects, trees and plants.
You might want to do some of the following things, like the news crew:

  • look for birds and find out what they are called e.g. hawks, owls
  • look for hedgehogs
  • find out the names of trees
  • watch wildlife programmes on TV
  • watch out for squirrels in the park
  • find frogs, ducks and fish in ponds
  • look out for wild rabbits (they can live in the oddest places like roundabouts on roads)
  • look out for foxes and deers (sometimes seen in city centres)
  • in your own back garden you will be able to see ladybirds, bugs, worms, butterflies, moths and lots and lots of other things too. How many different things can you find?
