Free recycling offers

Free home composters are being given to every single household in Hull in a drive to boost recycling rates.
Hull residents could fill the KC Stadium more than 14 times over with all the garden waste they throw away each year, including leaves and grass and hedge cuttings.
But rather then let all the goodness go to waste, Hull City Council is giving away the composters so residents can turn waste, into nutrients for their garden soil.
Composters can also be used to recycle food waste such as fruit and vegetable peelings, egg boxes and tea bags, as well as vacuum dust, wood ash and pet bedding from rabbits and guinea pigs.
"Currently too much waste in Hull is being disposed of in landfill sites. Landfill is expensive and polluting and the council could soon be fined by the Government because of the damage it causes to the environment," says Cllr Dave Woods..
"Recycling is a much better option in every way."
To claim a home composter, visit www.recyclenow.com/compost or phone 0845 077 0757.

Kids switch on to robot

Children in 19 primary schools will hear an environmentally-friendly message from Recycler the recycling robot (pictured left), who is made from recycled materials and has a stomach built from old water bottles.
Recycler, who is remote-controlled and 3ft-high, dances and sings a rap song encouraging pupils to learn the three Rs – to reduce, reuse and recycle waste.

Reusable garden sacks are also available free to residents who do not have room in thier garden for a home composter.
The sacks are ideal for carrying large quantities of garden waste to Hull's recycling centres at Wilmington, Burma Drive and, from May, Wiltshire Road. Two sacks available per household. Collect them for free at the centres.
