Know the score when eating out
Hull City Council is helping to pioneer a scheme to promote high standards of hygiene in more than 2,000 food outlets across the city, including cafés, pubs and restaurants.
Outlets are inspected by environmental health officers, who award a certificate showing a hygiene score of between 0-100. This is being called the 'Scores on the Doors' scheme.
Proprietors are asked to display their certificates in their premises, so that customers can make informed choices.
The scheme involves outlets that sell food, including supermarkets, takeaways, nursing homes, schools, hospitals and mobile traders.
Hull has been selected to run a pilot scheme, with several other local authorities, by the Government's Food Standards Agency.
"The scheme recognises and builds on the many years of rigorous inspections we have carried out on the public's behalf," said Garry Kitching, Hull City Council's food services manager.
"I hope customers look for the certificates, and if they are not on display, make a point of asking the food outlets why."
