Back row (l to r): the Lord Mayor's Consort Mr Brian Petch; Gary Thomas, Christina Young, and Pam Stange, all from Hull Council for Disabled People, with Lord Mayor Cllr Brenda Petch and the dragon with no name (see competition, right) |
Preparations are now underway for the Lord Mayor's Parade and East Park Gala, which will make a welcome return to the city on Saturday May 3.
The event, cancelled last year after flooding on large parts of the parade route and in East Park, is traditionally held in June.
But it has been brought forward, from now on, to the first May bank holiday weekend to allow more people to attend.
The parade of floats leave Walton Street at 12 noon before heading along Anlaby Road, Carr Lane, Alfred Gelder Street, and Holderness Road arriving at East Park at about 2.30pm.
Then the crowds will make their way to the gala to enjoy attractions such as donkey rides, an inflatable assault course and fairground rides.
"Losing the event last year was extremely disappointing," says Lord Mayor of Hull Cllr Brenda Petch.
"However, from now on the parade and gala will be held every May bank holiday weekend to give more people the chance to enjoy what is a popular family event." Meanwhile, a series of free workshops have been organised to give people ideas for making parade costumes and float designs from recycled materials.
The workshops take place from 10am to 4pm on March 8, 15 and 29, and April 5, 12 and 26 at the Maurice Rawling Community Centre, in Bean Street, off Anlaby Road.
For more information on taking part in the workshops and parade, call Hull City Council's Civic Office, or to hire a craft stall or trade stand at the gala call the events team.
Both can be contacted on 300300.
Name that dragon
Can you name the dragon made by Hull Council for Disabled People for their float? The dragon was made especially for last year's parade but was never used after the parade was cancelled due to the floods.
The person who comes up with the best name will win a prize of tea with the Lord Mayor in her parlour.
Please send your name suggestions to: Dragon's name competition, Hull in print, The Guildhall, Alfred Gelder Street, HU1 2AA. Closing date March 31.
