Top four rubbish places in Hull

Where to find your nearest household waste recycling centre

#

There are now four household waste recycling centres in Hull. You can find them at:

  • Wilmington, off Stoneferry roundabout
  • Sutton Fields, Amsterdam Road
  • Wiltshire Road, near the Hessle Road flyover
  • Burma Drive, off Marfleet Lane

You can recycle anything from fridges and freezers, to TVs and monitors, to books, clothes, shoes and garden waste.
Staff are on hand at each centre to help lift bulky items, where necessary.
What's more, the multi-million pound sites are among the most modern in the region.
"These centres are a fantastic opportunity for us to increase our recycling rates and help protect the environment for future generations," says Cllr David Woods, responsible for the environment, "If we don't recycle, our waste gets thrown in landfill sites which harm the environment.
"This also means the council has to pay expensive landfill taxes, which leaves less money to spend on other services."

Recycling facts

  • each year people in Hull produce a mountain of waste which is the equivalent in weight to 13,000 double-decker buses
  • landfill sites harm the environment because the decomposing waste gives off methane gas which causes global warming. Other substances from landfill sites can poison the soil and leak into the water table
  • currently Hull's recycling rate is 27 per cent. The target is 45 per cent
  • all the waste recycling sites are undercover (apart from Wilmington)
  • the Burma Drive recycling centre incorporates a recycling education centre which can be booked by schools or organisations. The centre is part built from recycled materials.
It uses solar and wind power and collects rain water which is used to flush toilets

Free booklet

To help residents make the most of the centres, Hull City Council has produced an information booklet containing maps, opening times and information about what can be recycled.
To receive a booklet, call 300300 or pick one up from one of the centres, any library or customer service centre.
