Bus services saved
Hull City Council has played a key role in ensuring bus services can continue to run on two routes across the city.
Passengers were facing the possibility that service 1C (which runs from Kingswood via the city centre to Sibelius Road) and service 41 (which connects Greatfield and Newbridge Road to Hull Interchange) would be lost after bus operator East Yorkshire Motor Services decided to withdraw them.
But thanks to the council putting the routes out to tender, route 41 has now been taken over by Stagecoach.
And as this magazine was going to press, a new operator was expected to be found for a contract to run service 1C.
In addition, the council also provided £2,000 of funding to EYMS to ensure it could keep running its buses on the 1C route until the new operator took over.
"Many bus passengers depend on these routes and there is clear demand for the services to keep running," says Graham Hall, the council's group manager for highways and open spaces.
"The competitive tendering process meant the council could find the best value bus operator and create a sustainable transport service for the future.
"We are committed to public transport.
Hull needs a modern and efficient bus network to reduce traffic congestion and provide much-needed services to passengers throughout the city."
