Older people in Hull who attended pensions advice sessions are now up to £25 per week better off – thanks to Hull City Council's help.
The council teamed up with the Pension Disability and Carers Service and NHS Health Trainers to provide eight half-day advice surgeries and free health checks at customer service centres throughout the city.
Held to coincide with Older Person's Day and Pensioner Benefit Take Up Week in October, more than 100 people went along to the free sessions and of those, 59 qualified for an average of £25 per week extra on their pensions.
Hull City Council has been working in partnership with the Pension Disability and Carers Service for nearly four years, during which time over £4m of additional benefit has been awarded to pensioners in Hull as a result of the joint approach to maximise benefit take up in the city.
"Our joint working with the Pension Disability and Carers service continues to yield positive results for Hull residents," said Andy Sims, benefits manager for Hull City Council.
Meanwhile, more than 400 families across the city will receive a total reduction of £81,000 on their Council Tax bills thanks to work carried out by council officers to ensure they receive their maximum entitlement of Council Tax Benefit.
