The effect our homes have on the climate

About a third of the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere that is causing climate change comes from our homes. The increasing number of electrical gadgets and appliances we use has greatly increased the amount of energy our homes need.
Predictions on climate change show there will be an increasing need to keep our homes cool in the summer with rising temperatures. We are likely to see our use of electricity increases all year round because of the additional need to cool our homes in the summer as well as warm them in the winter.

The picture below shows some of the ways in which we all use our homes that increases the release of carbon dioxide and so contributes to climate change

Saving the release of carbon dioxide from your home today reduces your household bills and also reduces the bill your family and everyone else will pay in the future for climate change.

If you have any questions about how your home contributes to climate change then email climate.change@hullcc.gov.uk or visit our web site at www.hullcc.gov.uk and click on Environment.
