Ancient art in a modern world
Invented 3,000 years ago by Chinese monks, Shaolin Kung Fu is now being taken up by Hull teenagers. Hull in print learns some of the benefits.
Sixteen-year-olds Andy Yeomans and Chris Purcell have both been members of Hull Kung Fu Club for more than two years.
In that time they've learned an art of self-defence which uses blocks, locks, holds, punches and kicks.
They have also gained fitness, confidence and new friends.
The lads are just two of more than 70 club members aged between 6 and 56.
Students at the club also have the chance to learn Shaolin Staff, a self-defence system using a 6ft-long pole made from oakwood, and T'ai Chi, the traditional Chinese mind-body system of relaxation.
Set up for life
As well as Kung Fu, Andy has also studied T'ai Chi and Traditional Chinese Medicine, and gained a qualification in sports coaching.
He says: "It has become a major part of my life and I've received mountains of benefits. It helps keep me fit and gives me the chance to teach and work with people I wouldn't normally get the chance to.
"It has also increased my confidence and leadership skills and taught me how to work in a team effectively. And in my opinion it has set me up for the rest of my life."
Moving forward
Like Andy, Chris is an assistant instructor, which means he has the opportunity to teach lower grade students. He also sits on the club's council, so he has a role in helping the club develop.
He says: "Personally, the club has helped me immensely. I have never been big on sport and after trying a few martial arts clubs in the past and having not been interested, I was surprised to see how much this club had to offer.
"Through the club and its instructors I've learned a lot of new skills."

The club meets every Wednesday evening between 7pm and 9.30pm at Hull Collegiate School, Anlaby. Instructors are trained in coaching disabled performers and first aid. For more information visit www.hullkungfu.co.uk
