Fight the fly-tippers

#

Firefighters are urging residents not to fly-tip rubbish as it could attract arsonists and put lives in danger.
The warning follows an arson attack in a 10-storey block of flats in Great Thornton Street, which firefighters believe may have been started using rubbish dumped on a first floor landing.
"It was an extremely severe fire which, without doubt, put many lives at risk," said Glenn Ramsden, from the Humberside Fire and Rescue Service.
"We urge people to stop fly-tipping - because it offers temptation to those who are likely to put lives at risk by setting fires."
Meanwhile, the council's environmental crime unit is urging residents to report fly-tippers, including recording vehicle registrations, times, dates, locations, and details of what was fly-tipped and, if known, the names and addresses of those responsible.
If caught, fly-tippers could face up to five years imprisonment and a fine of up to £50,000.
"It's about people having pride and respect in their neighbourhoods," said Mark Cornall, environmental enforcement manager at Hull Citysafe.
"Most of the rubbish fly-tipped could be recycled for free, using services provided by the council."
The council's CCTV network is also being used in the fight against fly-tippers.

Did you know?

Hull residents can have large household items removed from their homes free of charge through the council's bulky item removal service.
However, a charge is made for taking away DIY waste and large amounts of garden waste.
For more details call 300300.

It's now a criminal offence if householders do not take reasonable steps to ensure their rubbish is passed on to an authorized disposal person.
So, if you are using private companies to dispose of your waste, or if tradesmen doing work on your home are dumping it for you – make sure they are doing it legally by asking to see their waste carrier's certificate. Alternatively call the Environment Agency on 08708 506506 or visit www.environment-agency.gov.uk
