Bransholme post office saved
Residents of North Bransholme are celebrating after their local post office was reopened.
The post office has closed down twice in the last two years, forcing many customers to walk more than a mile to neighbouring village Wawne to collect pensions and use other vital services.
But now the Grampian Way premises have been taken on temporarily by Joanne Wisker, the postmistress from west Hull's Chanterlands Avenue post office.
She said: "The post office is now open Mondays to Saturdays. I am working on a temporary basis for now, but hope to stay permanently and fully refurbish the retail unit."
The reopening has been thanks to campaigning from local residents' group URBaN (United Residents for Bransholme Area North), with support from local ward councillor Nadine Burton and Hull City Council's North Carr Area Team.
"URBaN members were using their cars to take people who were stuck to other post offices," said Cllr Burton.
She added: "We were always trying to keep people informed about what was happening. We're confident that the post office will be open for good now."
Meanwhile, Hull City Council has now offered the post office a lifeline if needed - by offering it a counter within the council's estate office next door.
Area director of the North Carr team Gwen Lunn said: "This would be a much cheaper option and a good way of providing a sustainable future.
The offer can be taken up if ever needed." She added: "This is a local service which people depend on. The people who rely on it most are those who don't have the transport or mobility to get to other post offices."
URBaN member Gail Preston, from Greygarth Close, said: "I use the post office at least three times a week and it's been a relief to see it reopened."
