Rovers' return
These were the scenes on Sunday October 15 when Queen Victoria Square was transformed into a sea of red and white.
Thousands of Hull Kingston Rovers fans gathered to pay tribute to their team after they won promotion to the Super League.
An open-top bus had carried the players from their Craven Park ground to the City Hall for a champagne celebration with the Lord Mayor of Hull, Cllr Trevor Larsen.
He said: "Hull KR have had an excellent season, winning 16 out of 18 matches played, which is a reflection of the hard work and dedication between the coaching staff and players.
"Hull is now the only city that can boast about having two teams in the Super League, which is excellent news and gives Hull the status of being the home of rugby league.
"To have derbies back in the city after so many years is superb and will bring with it a friendly rivalry, along with raising the profile of Hull."
Thousands of fans had also made the trip to Warrington's Halliwell Jones Stadium the week before to witness Rovers' 29-16 victory over Widnes Vikings - and see them crowned National League One Champions.
Coach Justin Morgan, after his first season in charge, said the fans had been the team's 18th man - and also paid tribute to his players.
He said: "They will go down in history and nobody can ever take that away from them. I think in years to come they will ponder the victory with fond memories and be glad of the friendships that have come from it." |
