Spiders, bonfires and hedgehogs
 |
It's a shame I can't use some of my Scottish words to describe this month's weather.
'Dreich' would be appropriate (pronounced 'dreech') as it means wet and dismal.
But not all is doom and gloom, unless of course you've got arachnophobia!
This month finds a range of spiders making a bee-line (or should that be a spider line?) for your bath.
They come in the window seeking shelter, only to fall into your slippery-sided bath and be discovered by a sleepy you as you go for your morning shower.
If you have a brave partner, get him or her to shoo it outside again - but please don't kill it.
I spend many hours looking down a microscope at all the magnificent variations in spider legs, body shapes and eyes.
Once you get to understand spiders a little better, you appreciate how they do a very good job of munching through the even less desirable flies that buzz over the cat food you give to your pet or your home-baking.
On a happy note, there is the wonderful spectacle of fireworks to look forward to this month, but watch out for hedgehogs that may have set up a winter home in your pile of firewood.
Please, please check before you set it alight.
Better still, go to an organised bonfire and let someone else do the hard work as you stand by and enjoy the show.
Finally, keep warm and forget about the 'dreich' weather!
