November - a month to remember

Remembrance Day

#

Remembrance Day is on November 11. It is a special day when we remember all those men and women who died during the two World Wars and other conflicts. There is two minutes silence to help us think about this at 11am.
This is part of a famous poem that is often read out on that day:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

From 'For the Fallen' by Laurence Binyon (1869 - 1943)

Remember, remember the 5th of November

In 1605, Guy Fawkes and some other men, tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. They put barrels of gunpowder in the cellars under the building and were going to set them alight on the day that King James 1 was to open Parliament - but they were found out and were stopped. The men were angry because they felt that Roman Catholics were being treated unfairly. The story is remembered on November 5 in an event known as Bonfire Night.

Remember - firework safety

  1. Don't play with, throw or put fireworks in your pocket.
  2. Don't touch or go near fireworks once they have been lit or even if they have gone out as they may still be hot.
  3. Stand well back from bonfires and fireworks.
  4. With sparklers, wear gloves, keep at arms length and don't touch the end even after it has gone out as it will still be very hot.
  5. Keep pets indoors, put on music and close the curtains so they are not frightened.
  6. Have a bucket of water or sand ready for emergencies.
  7. It is best to let adults light the fireworks – you just enjoy watching them.
