Pictures of freedom

#

Fiona Caley's photograph of her mother and niece captured the spirit of the Wilberforce 2007 year – but it is even more significant now because her mum passed away in August this year.
The image was one of dozens of photographs on display at the Ferens Art Gallery last month which together formed the Wilberforce Women Greetings! exhibition.
Viewed by thousands of visitors, the photographs were taken by almost 100 women from both Hull and its twin city of Freetown in Sierra Leone.
The images reflect the themes of the Wilberforce year which are pride, freedom, belief and change. "Photos and messages, some very personal, united women from both cities in friendship," says Fiona, who set up the exhibition at the Ferens, and co-organised the Wilberforce Women's project which ran photography workshops in Hull and Freetown.
She added: "My photo captured a moment of connection between mum and my niece.
"Mum died in the summer so the image has a deeper significance now.
Life has changed for me, but I am so pleased I carried my camera with me that day."
To mark the close of the Wilberforce 2007 year, Hull in print this month looks at some of the year's successes and achievements on its four centre pages.
