A brand-new, £11 million hotel is to be built on the site of the derelict New York Hotel on Anlaby Road.
Hull City Council's planning committee recently granted permission for the 124-bed hotel, which will have conference and function facilities, coffee lounges, dining and bar areas and a rooftop garden.
Designed by the Hull office of award-winning architects Browne Smith Baker (BSB), the new hotel will be rated as either three or four stars.
It will take 12 months to build, during which time bedroom units will be made off site and lifted into place by crane.
When complete, at least 10 per cent of the energy used by the hotel will come from renewable sources.
"This is a significant step forward in realising the potential of this important city centre site," said BSB director John Hunter.
"The existing buildings are in such poor condition that it is imperative for the sake of the area, its residents, visitors and the general public that we replace them with a building which benefits the location."
While the hotel development takes place, BSB will also be restoring the façade from the former Albert Hall Victorian music hall, on nearby Midland Street, to its former glory.
