Sonic youth
A CD featuring some of Hull's finest pop talent is to be released nationally.
Already more than 1,000 copies of the CD, which features 41 tracks by local musicians, have been sold across the city.
And now it's hoped the CD will be noticed by big record companies who have the power to make a musician from the city famous.
"It's about getting young talent noticed," says Richard Ellarby (21), a volunteer at The Warren youth centre, which has produced the CD under its new label Warren Records.
"There are a lot of great musicians around and this is a way of empowering them and giving them a platform.
"What's more, it's an ideal Christmas present and at a fiver it's great value."
The CD, called 'State of the City,' was officially launched last month at a gig (pictured) at The Lamp club, off Beverley Road.
It's available from stores including HMV, Lush, Chinese Laundry, Beasleys, Bad Dog Music, Lamp, Adelphi, The Sesh and from Hull Tourist Information Centre.
Videos of some of the artists, including The Cliques, Projekt Feenix, Counting Coins, and Jody McKenna, can be seen online at www.warrenrecords.org
Plans are afoot to launch a second CD next year.
Secret discovery
Warren Records was set up following a £20,000 donation from London businessman Martin Stamp.
Mr Stamp visited The Warren while appearing in an episode of Channel Four TV series The Secret Millionaire in which millionaires go undercover to discover worthy causes.
Mr Stamp, who made his fortune by designing a computer programme for the stock broking industry, came to Hull posing as a teaching assistant and spent more than a week at the The Warren, where he was impressed with the young people's enthusiasm for making music. |
