Lights spectacular

Come and see the Christmas lights switch-on

#

More than 15,000 people are expected to attend this year's Christmas lights switch-on in Hull city centre and enjoy the range of entertainment laid on.
"We're lining up a great evening and there will be something for everyone," says Cllr John Robinson, who is in charge of culture in the city.
"It will also launch Hull's build-up to Christmas and hopefully the lights will attract more shoppers into the city centre to ensure shops, stores and market traders have a successful season."
Taking place on Thursday 19 November, the entertainment starts at 5pm in Queen Victoria Square and will be hosted by Paul Foster and Rosie Madison from the 96.9 Viking FM breakfast show, along with Darren Lethem (pictured above) from the Magic 1161 breakfast show.
Meanwhile, a Santa Parade will set off from the Guildhall at 5.15pm to travel down Guildhall Road, Lowgate, Alfred Gelder Street, Monument Bridge, and on to Queen Victoria Square.
A carriage carrying Santa and the Lord Mayor of Hull Cllr Karen Woods will arrive at the City Hall in time for the lights switch-on at 5.45pm.
The evening will also feature the ever-popular Caroloke on the Big Screen and a performance by the winners of the 96.9 Viking FM children's carol competition.
Road closures will be in operation from 8am - 11pm in Paragon Street between Chariot Street and Carr Lane, and from 5.45pm - 7.30pm from Queen's Dock Avenue and the Queen Victoria Square bus lane to Chariot Street.
(Depending on the size of the crowd, Humberside Police may close the bus lane earlier in the evening if it is deemed necessary to ensure public safety.)

More festive fun

For Christmas shopping ideas, why not visit the 44-log-cabin German 'Christkindl' Market from 19 November - 30 December in Jameson Street, King Edward Street, at the Rosebowl fountain end of Queen's Gardens, and the Craft Fair in Queen Victoria Square on 28 November.
There will also be a Victorian Christmas in Hull's Museums Quarter on 28 November, from 11am - 4pm, with free attractions including Santa's Grotto, Victorian costumed characters, storytelling, and Punch and Judy.
