Gear shift for recycling
A west Hull resident has put an artistic spin on re-using unwanted bicycles – by turning them into sculptures to hold flower pots and tubs.
Retired welding engineer Harry Shann (pictured above), of Cottingham Road, makes and sells the sculptures and gives the cash away to good causes.
His finished designs now grace many gardens and patios.
"I have worked on more than a hundred over the past three to four years," Harry said.
"I enjoy the work and the fact that I am doing something to help the environment.
I give the money to the Lions Club, which then uses it to support good causes."
So far he has raised £4,000 by selling his sculptures at about £30 a time.
He is given abandoned or unclaimed bikes by Humberside Police and also receives donations of bicycles.
His work is setting an example for others to follow, says Stuart Brigham, Hull City Council's recycling education officer.
"It's a great thing to do and shows how skill and imagination can bring new uses for unwanted items," Mr Brigham said.
"I hope more people come up with ideas like this for re-using all kinds of materials, because ultimately it means less waste ends up in landfill sites."
