Swine flu – reducing your risk

With another wave of swine flu expected in the autumn, the ways in which the NHS is preparing are never far from the headlines.
Have you thought about what you can do to reduce your risk of catching swine flu in the first place?
Jim Deacon, assistant director of emergency planning for the NHS in the Humber region, explains:
"Whilst cases of swine flu are relatively mild at the moment, it is likely that in the coming winter, we will experience a more serious wave.
"The healthier a person is now, the lower their risk of catching swine flu in the first place, and if they do catch it, then their recovery time is likely to be much shorter.
"One of the best pieces of advice we in the NHS can give people is to stop smoking. As the second wave of swine flu is likely to be more severe, those who smoke are more likely to suffer complications such as chest infections and bronchial problems, and these complications are always more severe in the colder weather.
"The NHS offers free stop smoking support to people across Hull and the East Riding, and this can be delivered in many different ways, including one-to-one sessions, telephone support and group meetings.
"Drinking sensibly and eating healthy foods (including five portions of fruit and vegetables a day) will also help to boost your immune system and ensure you're fit to fight the flu this winter."
The Hull and East Riding NHS Stop Smoking Support Service can be contacted free on 0800 915 5959.

Information on swine flu is available via the swine flu information line on 0800 1 513 513.
