Keep tradition alive

#

This sight may become a thing of the past unless new dance members are found

Morris dancing in Hull and East Yorkshire could soon come to an end unless new dancers are found.
As the only Morris dancers in the area, the members of the Green Ginger Morris and Sword group are calling on Hull men to join them to ensure the tradition is kept alive.
In their floral straw hats, white shirts, and black knee breeches, the Morris men – who dance with sticks, swords, bells, and handkerchiefs – cut an unmistakable sight when they perform outside pubs and at community events in the region.
"Morris dancing is a great hobby but requires a certain level of fitness and our older members are finding it hard going and sore on the knees," said Ian Morrison, the squire of the Morris group.
"Some of them may only be able to carry on for a year or two and if we don't find replacements when they do finish, the group may have to fold.
"We need new members – men in their 20s, 30s and 40s – who can take the group forward."
Members meet for rehearsals on Tuesday evenings from 8 September at Cottingham Methodist Church Hall in Hallgate from 8-10pm and anyone who would like to join can go along.
