Faster service at library
Harry Potter would almost certainly approve...
The boy wizard, made famous in the novels of JK Rowling, famously uses a wand to cast spells, but now a digital wand can be used to locate books in Hull Central Library – as if by magic.
The hand-held scanner device helps library staff to find books anywhere in the library quickly and easily, by giving off a series of bleeps to direct them to the
right place.
The end result is a speedier service to customers who are searching for a particular title.
Meanwhile, a new, state-of-the-art 'self service' express system has been installed at the Albion Street site to give customers the option of checking out their own books, returning them, and paying any fines at the same time.
Self service is ideal for people who are in a hurry and want to avoid queues, and also frees up time for librarians to devote to other services that customers want, such as arranging book launches and signings by authors.
"The new systems are working really well and we have had positive feedback from children and young people and other library users who have used the new services so far," said Michelle Alford, assistant head of service for Hull City Council's libraries.
"I know some people may have concerns over getting to grips with the express system but members of staff will always be available to help or serve them in the usual way if they prefer."
