An important friend

In the fight against swine flu, public health leaders say it's important to plan ahead and identify a 'flu friend' who could collect anti viral medication or supplies for you if you become ill with swine flu.
A flu friend could be a relative, friend or neighbour who is symptom free, and could play a very important role by helping you out when you are unwell.
Dr Wendy Richardson, director of public health for Hull, said: "This will help to prevent those who are showing symptoms from venturing out and potentially spreading the virus further."
People who suspect they may have swine flu should stay at home and call the National Pandemic Flu Service on 0800 1 513 100 to have their symptoms assessed.
People can also self-assess using the symptom checker on www.direct.gov.uk/pandemicflu
Depending on your symptoms, the flu line may issue you with a unique reference number and direct you to a local antiviral collection point (ACP). This number should be given to your flu friend, who will need ID in order to collect your medication.
It's essential they have with them some form of ID from you as well as themselves, for example a passport, driving licence or paid utility bill (of not less than six months old).
You might also want to be a 'good neighbour' and offer to be a flu friend to someone living nearby who, for example, lives alone and doesn't have family support. It would give them reassurance that if they fall ill they have someone to turn to who would collect their medicine and food supplies.

Information on swine flu is available via the swine flu information line on 08001 513 513.
