Have your say

#

Residents are being urged to have their say in making Hull a better place to live – by casting their votes in the local elections on 5 May.
The elections are a chance for residents to vote for councillors who could ultimately make decisions which affect the quality of their lives.
And that includes in areas such as education, crime and antisocial behaviour, the state of our roads, and waste management.
"This is a chance for people to influence decisions that shape their lives, and to make sure their voice is heard," says returning officer Nicola Yates, who is in charge of running the elections.
"But we'd like to remind residents that they need to be on the electoral register in order to vote. People who've moved house, for example, will need to update their details.
"Some residents may also be planning to be away on 5 May, given the extra bank holiday for the royal wedding, so it's worth applying now to vote by post or proxy."
The elections on 5 May are also combined with a nationwide referendum on the voting system used to elect MPs to the House of Commons.
The referendum results will be used to decide whether to replace the 'first-past-the-post system' (in which voters can vote for only one candidate) with the 'alternative vote' system (in which voters can rank candidates in order of preference).
People also need to be on the electoral register in order to vote in the referendum.
To put your details on the register, or to check if you are on it, contact the electoral services office on 300 300.
People can put their details on the electoral register by downloading a form from the council website www.hullcc.gov.uk (and clicking on the electoral services link).
They can also request a form (or check if they're on the electoral register) by emailing electoral.services@hullcc.gov.uk
The deadline for registration is Thursday 14 April 2011.
No local elections are taking place this year in the Bricknell, St Andrews, Southcoates East and Southcoates West wards, however all wards are voting in the referendum.

Listening to your views

Hull City Council has listened to feedback from members of the public in re-thinking its decisions to cut certain services under plans to save £65 million in the next financial year.
Almost 1,100 people gave feedback on the outline budget proposals earlier in the year, stating that their main priorities for the council were that it supports the most vulnerable, keeps communities safe, and helps children and young people make the best start in life.
And as a result, amends were made to the final budget, including that more than £6 million will now be re-invested in projects under the Supporting People scheme, which helps vulnerable people.
Also more money has now been re-invested in youth services.
The £65 million in savings will be made mainly through reducing back office functions as well as the number of council buildings.
There will be almost 1,400 job cuts.
